About EveryBank.

EveryBank, N.A. was not founded, chartered, or capitalized. It was computed. Every quarter, it is recomputed from scratch — the equal-weighted average of every one of the roughly 4,200 banks that filed an FFIEC Call Report for the period. It has no board, though it has one on its earnings calls. It has no headquarters, though it has employees, in the sense that a national average has a national average number of employees.

Why this exists

Every headline about "the average American bank" implicitly picks one of two very different institutions and doesn't say which. Sometimes it means the bank you get by averaging every dollar in the system — a bank so large it would rank among the biggest in the country. Sometimes it means the bank sitting in the actual middle of the roster — a few hundred million in assets, no trading desk, no derivatives, no trust department, doing exactly what a bank does in one county and nowhere else. EveryBank exists to stop conflating the two, by computing both, every quarter, from the same public data every other analysis in this project already uses.

It is also, frankly, a data-storytelling exercise — a fictional entity built to make coverage rates, skew, and "the mean is not the median" concrete and a little bit funny, rather than leaving them as a footnote.

A brief (computed) history

2016
EveryBank's earliest quarter in this dataset. ~6,100 constituent banks; mean assets $2.73B, median $194M.
2018
Mortgage-banking origination data (Schedule RC-P codes HT81/HT82) becomes available system-wide for the first time — EveryBank's mortgage factory segment gets a start date.
2020–21
The largest mortgage-origination boom on record shows up cleanly in the average bank's numbers — quarterly originations roughly double.
2022–23
Rate hikes end the boom. Origination volume falls by more than half. Credit-derivative adoption, meanwhile, keeps climbing — a different cycle entirely.
2026
EveryBank's current quarter. ~4,200 constituent banks (a 31% decline in headcount since 2016, entirely through consolidation); mean assets $6.24B, median $387M.

How we're computed

Every figure on this site traces back to one of three public datasets, accessed the same way every other analysis in this project accesses them:

FFIEC Call Report data
~4,200 banks, 2016–2026, quarterly · balance sheet, loans, securities, derivatives, funding, mortgage banking, trust
FFIEC National Information Center (NIC)
Ownership structure · subsidiaries, affiliates, ultimate parents, 4,000 unique trees walked
FDIC Summary of Deposits (SOD)
2026 branch census · every branch, every bank, every city

Three rules, applied everywhere on this site: derivatives are read from Schedule RC-L only, never the regulatory-capital table in RC-R Part II, which is known to omit real positions. Mortgage servicing counts only codes B804/B805 (genuine 1-4 family mortgages) — loans serviced for others that aren't mortgages (credit cards, auto, SBA) are tracked separately, not folded in. And every average on this site is reported next to its coverage rate — what share of banks actually have a nonzero value — because the average alone hides whether something is universal or a rounding error for everyone except a dozen constituents.

Leadership

EveryBank's management team is, like the balance sheet, a composite — invented for the earnings materials, not drawn from any real institution.

What EveryBank is not

It is not a real bank. It has no charter, no RSSD, no FDIC certificate, no ticker, and it will not open you an account, take your deposit, or process a loan application. It is not an FDIC member, is not FDIC-insured, and holds no deposits of any kind. Nothing on this site is investment advice, a securities offering, or a solicitation. Every figure is either a real, sourced average across real banks' real public filings, or is clearly labeled as an estimate (see the footnotes on Find a Branch for the one modeled number on this site — implied employees per location).
